Henrik Pedersen scored the two opening goals on his home league debut for the Tigers, with Wayne Brown grabbing another before half-time. Dan Harding got one back for the visitors before the break but it wasn't enough to avert a defeat.

Ipswich came closest to scoring in the opening ten minutes as the ball fell to Tommy Miller on the edge of the box and the midfielder struck the ball fiercely against the left-hand post.

Hull were the ones to open the scoring on 11 minutes as Jay-Jay Okocha swung in a cross from the left straight on to the head of Pedersen, who nodded it neatly past the stranded Neil Alexander from close range.

Boaz Myhill was on hand to stop Ipswich equalising minutes later as Miller found space in the box and hit shot from six yards, but the Hull keeper managed to dive deep to his left to turn the ball away.

The visitors nearly levelled the score soon after as Owen Garvan let fly with a shot from the left which deflected on to the right-hand post and out for a corner.

Hull made it 2-0 on 40 minutes. Pedersen chased down a long ball and powered the ball left-footed into the back of the net from 12 yards to give his side some breathing space.

It was soon 3-0 to the Tigers, as again Okocha curled in a cross from the left this time on to the head of Brown, who cleverly glanced his header onto the inside of the post and into the Ipswich net.

Jim Magilton's men grabbed what turned out to be a consolation on the stroke of half-time through a blistering strike from Garvan, but Hull controlled the second half with ease and picked up a much-needed three points.
