Tranmere went ahead through Shane Sherriff on 41 minutes but a second-half goal from Ben Burgess and an extra-time effort from Darryl Duffy gave Phil Parkinson his first win as Hull manager.

After a slow start, Chris Shuker came within inches of putting his Tranmere side ahead as his 20-yard free-kick whistled by Boaz Myhill's left-hand post.

Hull had a great chance to take the lead through Dean Marney midway through the half but, after running 20 yards and laying the ball off to Sam Ricketts, he couldn't find the net from 10 yards after a low cross from the Tigers right-back.

Myhill was again in action soon after as Gareth Taylor struck a shot from 30 yards but the Hull keeper managed to tip it over.

From the following corner on 41 minutes, however, Myhill couldn't keep the ball out as a looping corner from Kevin Ellison found Sherriff at the back post and despite the efforts of the Hull defence he headed the ball just over the line to put Tranmere in front.

Hull grabbed the equaliser on 52 minutes as Ryan France sent in a curling cross from the right and Ben Burgess rose to head the ball into the back of the net from eight yards.

Two headers from Hull moments later nearly saw them take the lead but Gavin Ward did well to stop both Burgess and Stuart Elliott's efforts from inside the area.

Craig Fagan almost netted in the first half of extra-time but fired wide from inside the area.

Hull did finally take the lead on 110 minutes as substitute Duffy struck the ball from 25 yards and it flew past the hapless Ward to seal the win for the Tigers.
