What began as a low key match ended in explosive circumstances as Hull City snatched a late winner from ten-man Boston and then had to wait until another corner flag could be found to replace the one goalscorer Stuart Green broke in his celebration.

Jason Price had three chances inside the first ten minutes for City, before in the 13th minute a shaky period in City's defence saw Green's header fall straight to Tom Bennett whose ten-yard shot was well saved by Paul Musselwhite at the far post.

The game had already gone a little of the boil when Neil Redfearn hit a 30-yard free-kick well over the bar on 20 minutes and although Boston were getting into the game as it progressed City had the bigger share of the chances.

On 29 minutes Justin Whittle's header was saved by Paul Bastock and a minute later Stuart Elliott woke everyone up with a looping header from 12 yards which looked like it was sailing over when it dipped over a stunned Bastock into the back of the net.

In the second half Mark Angel took a free-kick after Alton Thelwell fouled Stuart Douglas on the left hand side of the area.

Musselwhite flapped at Angel's cross and Paul Ellender poked it in in the ensuing scramble.

A minute later Green shot wide, but City were falling apart and Boston, spurred on by a large away following began to go on the attack.

But in the 68th minute defender Matt Hocking was dismissed for a challenge on Danny Allsopp who had been through on goal. The resultant free-kick was taken by Elliott.

Ben Chapman was booked for encroaching, giving City a ten-yard advantage, but Elliott's free-kick from the edge of the area hit the wall and Green's follow-up went wide.

And just when Boston thought they had earned a point, Green nodded home, but his delight was marred by his booking for his celebration.
