Sheffield United moved up to 16th in the Championship after condemning Hull to their first home league defeat of the season with a 1-0 victory at the KC stadium.

The goal came early in the second half through a superb strike from Blades' midfielder Mark Yeates.

Hull nearly opened the scoring in spectacular fashion inside the first 20 minutes as Robert Koren played a neat one two with Paul McShane on the edge of the box allowing the Slovenian international space to fire a thunderous half-volley just past the right hand post.

The visitors came close to taking the lead on the stroke of half time as a Yeates corner found the head of Chris Morgan who’s towering effort from 6 yards had to be well turned round post by keeper Matt Duke.

Hull’s Mark Cullen was presented with a great opportunity moments into the second half as a poor clearance left the young striker with a open goal, however, the tigers forward lashed his first time effort wide of the mark from 12 yards.

Sheffield United then took the lead on 53 minutes as ex-Hull loanee Yeates raced at the tigers defence, beat two men and fired the ball past a hapless Duke from 18 yards to register his fourth goal of the campaign.

Tom Cairney could have leveled for the home side just after the hour mark but his turn and shot from inside the box saw the ball flash wide of the visitors goal.

Hull substitute John Bostock then tried his luck from a free-kick but his left-footed effort from 30 yards skimmed just over the cross bar.

The Blades were nearly 2-0 up with ten minutes left as an arrowed Jamie Ward strike from 20 yards had to be well saved by Duke.

Nigel Pearson's men then should have leveled with just minutes left as a Kevin Kilbane cross found McShane with space inside the box but the Irish international could only send his header wide of the mark from close range.

Bostock had a shot late on for the tigers but his effort was comfortably saved by keeper Steve Simonsen.
