Defences stayed on top in a closely-fought derby clash in which both sides ultimately cancelled each other out.

Hull were the better side at the start but Doncaster broke their grip on the game and were the dominant force after the interval.

Top scorer Danny Allsopp twice had chances to fire Hull in front following mistakes by Tim Ryan in the first three minutes but failed to capitalise.

Allsopp was denied on one occasion by a fine save from Andy Warrington who also showed excellent reflexes to stop a fierce shot from Stuart Green in the 12th minute.

Rovers weathered the storm and hit back to take charge themselves before the interval with Simon Marples having a 35-yarder deflected just off target.

Ryan headed just wide from a 38th minute corner and John Doolan produced a defence-splitting pass to set up a chance for Gregg Blundell which was squandered on the stroke of half time.

Rovers continued to dictate the pace at the start of the second half with Doolan running the game in midfield.

But the home side were also wasteful in front of goal with Jamie Paterson scooping a 47th minute shot over the bar before Dean Keates missed a golden opportunity at the other end.

Doolan had a fierce shot blocked and Michael McIndoe also went close in quick succession as Rovers continued to call the tune.

But the visitors held firm at the back with Justin Whittle and Damien Delaney in commanding form.

Allsopp had a glancing header saved in a rare Hull attack in the 66th minute but Doncaster finished the stronger side with Doolan inches away from snatching a decider when he had a 20-yard shot deflected two minutes from time.
