Season Review: West Ham United

Last updated : 04 June 2009 By Lee

How did your season go? Did West Ham finish where you expected them to?
Season went pretty well but there's a slight tinge of disappointment that we couldn't hold on to 7th place and get into Europe. We were there for a decent period but we lost some crucial matches towards the end. Saying that, with the change of Manager, the 'Tevez saga' still hanging over us and reported financial troubles I think most would be happy. We finished 10th last season so another mid table finish was expected.

Who was West Ham's player of the year?
The official award went to Scott Parker. Those also in the running were Green, Upson, Behrami and Neill. Young player of the year went to Jack Collison.

Who were the best players you saw play against West Ham?
I don't tend to notice the opposition players too much but Gerrard ripped us apart the other week in the 3-0 defeat to Liverpool. I was also very impressed with Wilson Palacios in the game against Wigan and am not surprised he moved for such a big fee.

What did you make of Hull City?
The Queens Gardens with the Maritime Museum are pleasing to the eye and the cream telephone boxes make it memorable. Too far North for my liking though.

You obviously started off like a steam train with good wins away to Tottenham and Arsenal then it all seemed to go wrong. Your second half record has to be one of the worst in Premiership history but your aim at the start should have been to survive and you did.

Not sure what your Manager was doing holding a half time team talk on the pitch at Man City and outside of Hull most seem to think that was a big part of your slip down the table.

Where do you need to strengthen this summer?
We desperately need strikers. This season we lost Ashton to Injury at the start and Bellamy was sold to Man City in January. Carlton Cole has done well but missed crucial games towards the end due to injury which means we were left with David Di Michele and the very unfit Diego Tristan playing all the time. Most believe this is the reason we missed out on 7th place.

Who'll be on their way out?
Zola has said he wants a smaller squad. I would think we'll be trying to get rid of any or all of the following: Lee Bowyer, Callum Davenport, Nigel Quashie, Di Michele (Loan - will probably go back to Torino) and Julian Faubert.

West Ham's best 11 of the season?

Green
Neill Tomkins Upson Ilunga
Behrami Parker Noble Collison
Cole Bellamy

I would like to include Dean Ashton and Kieran Dyer but they just haven't played enough games.
