Season Review: Liverpool

Last updated : 06 June 2009 By Gary Purvis
How did your season go? Did Liverpool finish where you expected them to?
It was a promising season for Liverpool and certainly a final position we would have happily accepted back in August. Having said that, it is clear where improvement is needed and hopefully that will be something Rafael Benitez addresses next season.

Who was Liverpool's player of the year?
Several players punched above their weight this season, but Steven Gerrard was once again the talisman and the one player that the team would suffer without over the course of a season.

Who were the best players you saw play against Liverpool?
Without doubt it has to be Andrei Arshavin's performance in the 4-4 draw with Arsenal which put paid to our title challenge.

What did you make of Hull City?
Good start to the season, plenty of confidence after getting good results against some of the top teams, but you went into freefall in the final few months and were only saved by the horrendous form of Newcastle United.

Where do you need to strengthen this summer?
We still need to find a quality striker to play alongside Fernando Torres.

Who'll be on their way out?
Sami Hyypia has already decided to move on and we are thankful for the 10 years he gave to the club. Xabi Alonso's future is in doubt, but now that Gareth Barry has joined Manchester City then hopefully we will be able to persuade him to stay.

Liverpool's best 11 of the season?
Reina
Arbeloa, Carragher, Skrtel, Aurelio
Alonso, Macherano
Kuyt, Gerrard, Benayoun
Torres
