You Can't Always Get What You Want

With the excitement of a £7million bid and the prospect of seeing Fraizer Campbell - the young man who did more than most to get us promoted last season - become a Hull City player again has had just about every fan talking (on and on). A signing we'd really appreciate, who could possibly be a star for us this season, or if not, in seasons to come (even firing us back into the Premier League if it comes to that).

Alas, the deal didn't come off, and it wouldn't have done either way, as it turns out; if Man United didn't get Berbatov, they'd have wanted to keep him, and United getting Berbatov meant Spurs needed him. How disappointing, after all the talk, that it finally ended with those circumstances. It just was never to be.

Woe, we must pick ourselves up from our 0-5 defeat without the help of Fraizer Campbell. But before you go peering over the Humber Bridge, or dangling off it Paul Duffen and Phil Brown, who some fans are moaning about: remember we did actually make some signings. At 31 years old, Daniel Cousin might not give us many years of service (unless he does a Deano) but he's currently at the perfect age for a striker and has a scoring rate of 1 in 3 in France and Scotland. Accomplished. Phil Brown has now got some great options up front with Cousin, Marlon King and Geovanni (and the rest) competing for what has been until now two places. Where would Campbell have fitted in that?

Paul McShane and Kamil Zayatte might not have quite such impressive reputations but they provide cover in the positions we desperately need it. More desperately than we needed Fraizer Campbell, if we're honest.

"You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes you just might find you get what you need," says Mick Jagger. How we all wanted our £7million man Fraizer Campbell, but really needed our proven scorer and new defenders.
