Wrong at the Back

My first look at the new Hull City side left me with quite a few mixed feelings but also with the nagging doubt that some the new players I saw in action against Grimsby Town, didn't look that much better than some of those looking on from the sidelines.

My greatest cause for concern surrounded the goings on in the centre of the City defence. It's early days and the bonding process is incomplete, but, the expression "ball watchers" sprang readily to my lips when looking at the combination of Greg Strong and John Anderson.

The Codheads are in complete and utter turmoil but they managed to expose what I believe may be the biggest weakness in manager Jan Molby's Third Division promotion preparations. I hope that my reservations are proved to be groundless but somehow I don't think so.

The ball into the box was allowed to find the opponents head unmolested on far to many occasions for my liking and I could not help feeling that some of the big lower division blockheads, that would mug their grannies for the odd goal here or there, will find it easy to get headers in on Matt Glennon's goal.

Call me old fashioned if you like, but it is my belief that one of the central defenders HAS to attack the ball and take responsibility for clearing the danger. I didn't see that happen in the game against Grimsby.

What I did see were two defenders who look comfortable on the ball when it's on the floor, and not so much at ease when it was in the air. For me, neither of the two new boys looked that much better than Justin Whittle, in fact I left Boothferry Park thinking Justin should play as the regular starter in the centre of the defence.

But then, I'm by nature the kind of person that sees too much for my own good at football games (apparently).
