Technology, The Way Forward?

Twice this season, City have had goals awarded against them after the ball crashed down from the crossbar and in the opinion of the assistant referee, fell behind the goal line. Fulham's definitely did. I'm not quite so sure that Everton's did.

Reading benefited from possibly the worst goal decision ever last weekend. (If you have not seen it, look it up). Former Tiger Roy Carroll got away with a horrendous mistake whilst the custodian of Manchester United's goal and I seem to recall our very own Steve Wilson catching the ball some 2 foot inside his own goal at Barnet many moons ago, yet no goal was given.

The traditionalist may argue that it's just the way things go and they will even themselves out over the season. Why then do so many of the game's current managers and players want goal-line technology brought in?

In an ideal world the officials would get every decision correct, players would not try bending the rules, nor would they claim throw-ins which are not theirs, dive in and around the area or foul their opponents in ways they hope the officials will miss. Reality, however, is somewhat different.

I am quite sure that no-one wants to have a game which is stop start and every decision monitored and ruled on by a "5th referee" somewhere up in the stand. Surely though, when the technology is as available as it is and with the importance of goals in a match, it can not be a bad thing if rulings are brought in to confirm that the ball has fully crossed the line and therefore is legally a goal.

One possible solution could be if the defending team is not happy that a goal has been scored, the validity of it is checked and if found not to be a goal, an indirect free kick awarded to the defending team inside the 6 yard box.

I have heard arguments that it would be dangerous to the future of the game if technology starts to come into play. Do you agree? Is it a formality that goal line technology would lead on to offsides being looked at via that technology? Indeed, if that were the case, would it be a bad thing for the game?
