Pre-Season Summary

Pre-season, and most is well. The players are getting fitter and some of the performances, with so many changes during games, of personnel, are encouraging, despite the capitulation at Crewe. There are also likely to be some more deals before the big kick-off in just over two weeks' time.

The one real concern of mine is, like most other supporters, though it may obviously be being rectified shortly anyway, as Gardner hasn't performed yet, is the problems in defence. It does look like we need to strengthen in that department and the Premier league certainly finds teams out defensively, as Alan Hansen used to mumble about. Turner can definitely step up to the plate, but apart from maybe Gardner, Wayne Brown may get found out. We are short of cover in the left back role too. Andy Dawson, likeable chap and 100% player, may not have it for the Premiership. We can't expect to keep playing Sam Ricketts, or Nathan Doyle, as cover at left back.

I hope, as I anticipate the time to drag like mad now, that we at least get some cover at left back and hopefully another centre half in the building. Midfield-wise and striker-wise, providing we get Fraizer back, I'm fairly happy with our options, so let's hope that our friendly formation against Hearts and Osasuna is more typical of our opening line-up v Fulham.

Good luck to everyone concerned: management, players, supporters alike, for what will be an emotional rollercoaster ride with, hopefully, the Champions League to follow next season!
