No Regrets

In the past I've written articles bemoaning the policy of City to continually recruit players when we have more than adequate options in reserve. January alone has seen the arrival of three players, Ellison, Hessenthaler and Stockdale. I might well have argued that the likes of Keane, Edge, Green, Fry, Hinds and Wiseman were more than capable of plugging the gaps left by Thelwell, Joseph, Elliott and Ashbee. However, for the first time, I can see the thinking behind these recent acquisitions.

We are entering the last third of the season, which historically proves to be a time of fatigue related injuries and suspensions arising from five and ten yellow card milestones being reached. I can just imagine the gist of recent meetings between Pearson and Taylor. The chairman emphasising to the manager that he doesn't want to waste the position we find ourselves in. In order that, come the end of season we have no regrets, he would rather we addressed any question marks we may have regarding certain positions in the team.

With Thelwell's return still some time away, Wiseman's inexperience (I think he should have gone out on loan this season) and Hinds, Joseph and France playing out of their preferred positions, the signing of Stockdale, a specialist right back, appears to be a prudent move. Elliott's absence highlighted a clear deficiency in the squad with a huge list of players having a go down the left with little success. Ellison's capture was therefore essential. Finally, without Ashbee, we lack solidity, energy and leadership in the middle and although we have Green, Keane and Lewis they only offer some and not all of these qualities. Hessenthaler fits the bill exactly. Forget the age thing, I've seen him play for Gillingham this season and he not only gets about as well as anyone else, but better than most. Strong in the tackle, a good passer, vastly experienced and very vocal, he's just the ticket.

At this point we have more than enough cover in every position. So why are we keeping tabs on the likes of Fagan, Blackstock and Chadwick? Well, let's face it, Barmby plays if fit leaving one other forward berth between the others.

Since getting a start and scoring against Stockport, Allsopp has been on the bench. Why? I've no idea. I think he just needs a run in the team, but Taylor clearly thinks different. Facey seems to have stopped terrorising defenders and running the channels. Walters has gone to Scunthorpe in the hope of finding his scoring boots and Wilbraham, well, let's just say the jury is still out.

The lack of consistency and effectiveness from all of those who have filled this role has prompted the chase of another forward. If a new striker does arrive then that surely spells the end of one if not two of the afore mentioned. All in all we look as if we are covering all the bases in an attempt to prevent anyone saying "why didn't we sign a..." come the end of season, should we not have achieved automatic promotion. I don't suppose you can argue with that really... can you?
