Goal of the Season

Last updated : 21 July 2002 By Andy Beill
There are eight nominations for the best goal of 2001-02. The first is David Lee's 25-yard free kick against York back in September, curled delightfully around the wall and past Alan Fettis in the York goal.

Next up is Gary Alexander's goal against Rochdale at Boothferry Park. Theo Whitmore leaves the ball for the City forward to smash home left-footed from 25 yards out.

The third contender is Michael Reddy's first against Halifax. Theo Whitmore chips the ball over the visitors' defence and the loanee fires it in on the half-volley.

Gary Alexander is in there again for his superb strike at Rushden & Diamonds in October. 4 minutes into the match the ball runs loose, and Alexander steams in to rocket it past Billy Turley from 30 yards out.

Theo Whitmore's goal in the 5-1 rout against Cheltenham is the next pick. Whitmore knocks it round the defender, goes round the other side to collect it and then side foots it past the keeper.

Lawrie Dudfield's effort at Northwich Victoria in the FA Cup is next. Gary Alexander dummies as Rob Matthews plays the ball through for Dudfield who turns the defender inside out before tucking away his shot.

Lawrie Dudfield scored against Oxford a few weeks later for another Goal of the Season contender. Rob Matthews crossed from the right and Dudfield - just inside the box - scoops his foot around the ball and volleys it over the keeper.

And last - but not least - is a third for Gary Alexander. This one also came against Rushden & Diamonds, this time at Boothferry Park in February. Ryan Williams passes to Alexander who cleverly turns the defender on the edge of the area before slotting the ball under the keeper.

So there you have it, eight great goals - but which was best? Vote here.
