Post Match Reaction: Sheffield United 3-2 Hull City

Heartbreaking defeat at Bramall Lane after a mighty second half. In the end, probably our own fault. We chucked on 4 strikers and hammered them for 10 minutes, with Duffy setting up Elliott and Green doing the same for Duffy, both to score from close range and send the awesome City support into ecstacy. As soon as we hit 2-2, we were happy to take it and we let them boss the closing minutes, a la Wolves and Leicester. Still, it probably doesn't matter a lot in the grand scheme of things, 11 clear, 12 to play for.

We did OK in the first half, had a few efforts on goal and looked comfortable, but we made daft mistakes when it counted. Little things, like we didn't close down fast enough, didn't get back with them or tried to nick balls high up the pitch and got caught. All things we can learn from.

Bo was solid, making several good saves. Thelwell was poor, easily beaten most of the time and woeful, and I mean woeful, in possession. Dawson was his usual solid self. Cort and Delaney didn't get tight enough on Webber and let the big, fat, Shipperley latch onto Thelwell. Neither was helped by lots of decisions against from the fussy (and biased) referee.

In midfield, Green worked hard, but wasn't as effective as Welsh was last week, defensively. Going forward, he came into his own in the second half and should have been rewarded with a penalty after the most blatant foul in the history of football. Kenny hurt himself committing the foul and spent the next 20 minutes rolling around on the floor and debating whether he could continue. While this helped with the goals, it was in the injury time from this that they scored. Andrews did OK, but he wasn't the calming influence we needed in the middle. Ellison worked hard again, but squandered good crossing opportunities. He forced a great save from Kenny. Paynter was very uninvolved.

Parkin took the hits up front but didn't achieve much. Fagan tried hard but was isolated at times. We were much better when Duffy and Elliott game on, as we forced them back. Elliott's first 3 touches went to red shirts. His 4th was the goal and he was much better after.

Paddy Kenny was the villain, goading the fans, playing dead and making gestures at 2-1 and 3-2. To be fair, he was bombarded with chants of 'You fat b***ard', which he initially tried to joke off, but reacted to. According to the letter of the law, he shouldn't be allowed to do that, but there's no excuse for our fans trying to fight him.

All in all, a cracking day out and a wonderful fight back. In the end, we were beaten for making the same old mistakes time and again. We didn't keep the ball well enough, we panicked in possession, we were negative at 2-2 and we weren't ruthless enough in defence. If Thelwell is playing for a new contract, he needs to show something soon. So far, he's OK, but no better then Wiseman and not a whole lot better then Lynch.

Ratings: Bo 8, Thelwell 5, Dawson 7, Cort 6, Delaney 6, Paynter 5 (Elliott), Ellison 6, Andrews 6, Green 7, Parkin 6, Fagan 6 (Duffy).
