The home side were 3-1 ahead at half time courtesy of a Rob Northern hat-trick, while Dean Windass was City's scorer, having earlier missed a penalty.
Nick Barmby's late volley made it 3-2.
Trialist Sebastian Pelzer played the first half. The German left-back was formerly with Blackburn and more recently Dynamo Dresden.
