Watford for City in Play-Offs

Last updated : 04 May 2008 By Andy Beill
Watford drew 1-1 at Blackpool and so finish in 6th place, ahead of Wolves only on goal difference. City, already assured of 3rd place, failed to climb into the top 2 after losing 1-0 at Ipswich, and Stoke managed the point they needed to finish 2nd and send Leicester down to League One anyway.

The first leg at Vicarage Road will be a week today on Sunday 11th May at 12 noon. The second leg will be on the following Wednesday, the 14th of May, kicking off at 7:45pm at the KC Stadium.

The last meeting was just over five weeks ago, with City enjoying a 3-0 win over the Hornets at the KC Stadium. Watford won the other league meeting this season 1-0 at home to City. Marlon King, who has since been transfered to Wigan, scored the goal to put them 6 points clear of Bristol City at the top of the table with 11 games gone. The Tigers' last win at Vicarage Road was in October 1990 in the old Second Division.

Watford have been involved in the play-offs three times since the league introduced the system in 1987. They lost in the semi-finals to Blackburn in 1989, but beat Bolton in the final ten years later, and also achieved promotion to the Premiership by beating Leeds in 2006. City's only previous play-off involvement was in Division Three in 2001, losing 2-1 on aggregate to Leyton Orient.

The other 2007/08 play-offs will be between 4th-placed Bristol City, who beat Preston 3-0 today, and Crystal Palace, who moved up to finish 5th after thrashing Burnley 5-0. The first leg will be at Selhurst Park on Saturday, and the second leg at Ashton Gate on the following Tuesday, so the winners of the Hull City v Watford play-off will already know who their opponents will be in the final.

That takes place on Saturday 24th May, kick-off 3 o'clock. All five Championship play-off games, including both of City's matches, will be shown live on Sky Sports.

West Brom won the league today with a 2-0 win at QPR. Yesterday, Nottingham Forest clinched 2nd place in League One, and join Swansea in achieving promotion to the Championship.
