The Third Place #7

Last updated : 14 September 2003 By Andy Beill
Bristol Rovers 2-0 Boston United (attendance: 6,845)
Paul Tait got his third of the season midway through the second half, and was involved as Rovers sealed the win 10 minutes from time. He got his head to a corner, and Boston defender Mark Greaves couldn't prevent it going in ahead of Junior Agogo.

Bury 1-1 Cheltenham Town (attendance: 2,753)
Town defender Kevin Amankwaah gave away a 35th minute penalty to Bury, and player-manager Andy Preece duly despatched it. However, Kayode Odejayi (71) levelled in the second half to deny Bury overtaking them in the table.

Cambridge United 1-1 Torquay United (attendance: 3,723)
After failing to score in their previous three games, Cambridge got off to a good start with Luke Guttridge firing them ahead after 9 minutes. But following a succession of Torquay corners, the visitors finally made one count with Jo Kuffour volleying home nine minutes before the break. Cambridge had defender Stevland Angus sent off in the 90th minute to cap a disappointing end to what looked like being a promising day for the side who have now drawn 5 of their 7 games.

Carlisle United 3-2 Rochdale (attendance: 4,532)
Carlisle got their first win of the season, with caretaker manager Paul Simpson getting them on their way with a 10th minute goal. Simpson's free kick then set up Richie Foran (17) for the second, and Foran turned provider for Brendan McGill to put the Cumbrians 3-0 up with just 22 minutes played. The visitors woke up in the second half, but despite Paul Connor (76) and Kevin Townson (79) pulling goals back, Carlisle held on for the win.

Darlington 2-1 Doncaster Rovers (attendance: 5,518)
The new Reynolds Arena has become a happy hunting ground for Darlington, and they have now won their last 3 games there. Five minutes after Jamie Patterson (53) put the visitors ahead with a penalty, Quakers boss Mick Tait brought on Neil Wainwright. He made an instant impact, scoring just seconds after coming on, and then got the winner with a volley in the 67th minute.

Huddersfield Town 3-0 Northampton Town (attendance: 8,285)
Two goals from 20-year-old hotshot Jon Stead took his tally up to 7 goals in all competitions this season. His first came in the 17th minute, and shortly after Tony Carss scored from the penalty spot, Stead got his second of the game from 25 yards out. Northampton drop to 14th, and 3 away defeats is a worry for fans of the side heavily tipped for promotion.

Hull City 3-2 Southend United (attendance: 12,545)
Leon Constantine scored the quickest goal of the day, volleying Southend in front after three minutes, but Danny Allsopp equalised just before half time following a mistake by Southend keeper Ryan Robinson. Peter Taylor's side took a 3-1 lead in the second half with goals from Andy Dawson and Stuart Elliott, but there was high drama in the last 10 minutes. Substitute Tes Bramble pulled a goal back before team-mate David McSweeney was sent off for a second bookable offence. They then got a lifeline in stoppage time but Bramble saw his penalty saved, and the losing streak on their travels extends to 13 games.

Lincoln City 0-0 Leyton Orient (attendance: 3,940)
Orient ended their three-match losing streak with a dull stalemate at Sincil Bank. They had to do it without Alan McCormack for the last 8 minutes after he elbowed Ben Futcher, and became the fourth O's player to be shown a red card in their last three games.

Macclesfield Town 1-1 Kidderminster Harriers (attendance: 1,988)
Kidderminster scored shortly before half time through Danny Williams, and the home side had goalkeeper Boaz Myhill to thank that they went in at the break just 1-0 down. His efforts were rewarded when Colin Little met a Martin Carruthers through ball in stoppage time to bag a draw, beating Stuart Brock who also had a good game in the Harriers' goal.

Oxford United 1-1 Mansfield Town (attendance: 5,625)
Oxford looked like extending their 100% record at the Kassam Stadium this season when Paul Wanlass put them in front after 64 minutes. But Neil MacKenzie denied them with a goal 11 minutes from time to maintain the Stags' position in the top seven, while Oxford's lead at the top is reduced to a single point.

Scunthorpe United 2-2 Swansea City (attendance: 3,510)
After scoring from the spot last week, Scunthorpe's Kevin Sharp put an early penalty over, and was made to pay by the league's leading scorer Lee Trundle. However, his 7th minute strike was cancelled out by a long-range Alex Calvo-Garcia goal two minute later. On the hour, Izzy Iriekpen was sent off for bringing down Steve McLean in the box. He showed his team-mate Sharp how to score from the spot, but the Iron's lead was short-lived as Trundle equalised to get his 8th of the season.

Yeovil Town 3-0 York City (attendance: 5,653)
York lost their third game on the trot in emphatic style, with the win taking Yeovil up to 5th. Kirk Jackson headed in the first after 21 minutes, and Colin Pluck doubled the lead on 34. Adam Stansfield made it two in successive games to end the scoring in stoppage time.

One game was played during the week:

Doncaster Rovers 0-0 Hull City (attendance: 7,132)
There was little action for the Sky Sports cameras on Monday night in front of a large Belle Vue crowd. Stuart Green was denied by Rovers keeper Andrew Warrington in the first half, while Dean Keates shot wide when he should have scored early in the second half, but Donny keep up their unbeaten home record.
