The Third Place #5

Last updated : 30 August 2003 By Andy Beill
Carlisle United 0-0 Cambridge United (attendance: 4,571)
Carlisle sacked their manager Roddy Collins yesterday after four league defeats, but finally got their first point today with midfielder Paul Simpson in temporary charge. He guided them to a draw at Brunton Park, and but for Cambridge keeper Shaun Marshall's efforts it could have been a win.

Huddersfield Town 2-1 Bristol Rovers (attendance: 8,486)
Goals from Rob Edwards (32) and Jon Stead (78) gave Huddersfield their first win in Division Three, with Paul Tait's goal deep into stoppage time no more than a consolation for Rovers.

Hull City 2-1 Boston United (attendance: 13,091)
The Tigers left it til late to seal a victory against ten-men Boston at the KC Stadium today. Stuart Elliott had headed City in front in the 34th minute, but Paul Ellender equalized 10 minutes after half time, meeting a crossed free kick unchallenged. Boston were reduced to ten men midway through the half when defender Matt Hocking - returning to his former club - brought down Danny Allsopp. Despite their numerical disadvantage, they held on for the draw until the last minute when Stuart Green headed home his first of the season to snatch it at the death.

Kidderminster Harriers 1-1 Oxford United (attendance: 3,262)
Oxford forward Mark Rawle could be labelled 'super sub'. After coming off the bench to score against Swansea last week, he was brought on in the 72nd minute today and scored 8 minutes later. However, Adam Willis made up for his red card last week by equalizing for Kidderminster with John Williams setting him up for a close range goal. Bo Henriksen could have grabbed a win for the home side when he won a late penalty, but he put his spotkick wide.

Leyton Orient 1-4 Cheltenham Town (attendance: 3,785)
Kayode Odejayi headed Cheltenham in front after 23 minutes, but Wayne Purser met Matt Lockwood's cross to level 6 minutes later. The visitors were soon back in front, however, with a deflected Darren Jones shot making it 2-1 after 32 minutes. Bob Taylor - making his first start for the Robins - then got two more, and Orient had no hope when goalkeeper Glenn Morris was sent off for coming out and fouling Odejayi just before half time. However, Town were unable to add to their lead in the second half as the home fans feared they may run riot.

Lincoln City 3-0 York City (attendance: 3,892)
York's winning run jolted to a stop at Sincil Bank today as Lincoln picked up their first win. Mark Bailey had hit the crossbar before his team-mate Gary Fletcher went one better and opened the scoring in the 21st minute. Bailey's long throw-in ended at Fletcher's feet and he fired the Imps in front. Richard Butcher (72) sent them 2-0 up, before Paul Mayo wrapped up the win in the closing stages with a penalty.

Macclesfield Town 4-1 Yeovil Town (attendance: 2,221)
Yeovil have failed to keep up their form from the opening games as Macclesfield gave them a lesson in league football. Two each from Martin Carruthers and Danny Whitaker gave Macclesfield the win, with Adam Lockwood denying them their first clean sheet since the opening day, but it wasn't nearly enough to deny the Silkmen of their first win of the season.

Northampton Town 1-0 Doncaster Rovers (attendance: 4,933)
Like Yeovil, Doncaster Rovers' early promise has come off the rails. Lawrie Dudfield sent Northampton up to 5th in the table with a 76th minute header, and Town stood up to a late onslaught from the visitors to save the win.

Rochdale 4-2 Darlington (attendance: 2,518)
David McGurk opened for Darlington after half an hour, but Lee McEvilly scored twice - the first coming from the penalty spot - to put Rochdale in front. Gary Pearson put Darlington back on level terms a minute later with a longe range effort. But 'Dale took control in the second half, with goals from Paul Connor (59) and Lee Burtos (65) handing Darlington their fourth defeat of the season.

Scunthorpe United 2-1 Torquay United (attendance: 3,080)
Late drama at Glanford Park sent Torquay home with nothing. Martin Gritton had put the visitors ahead after just 15 minutes when the Iron defence was caught sleeping, but the game woke up in the 75th minute with Scunthorpe midfielder Wayne Graves being shown his second yellow card in the space of 3 minutes. The ten men fought back to equalize four minutes from time through Steve McLean, before Alex Calvo-Garcia stole it at the death for a spectacular finalé.

Southend United 1-0 Bury (attendance: 3,172)
The heroics of Bury keeper Glyn Garner saw him save a Mark Gower penalty, but the Shrimpers finally beat him with a minute to go courtesy of Leon Constantine's last gasp strike.

Swansea City 4-1 Mansfield Town (attendance: 6,991)
It was an unhappy trip to Wales for Mansfield, who had Iyseden Christie sent off after only 8 minutes for an off the ball incident. Kieron Durkan soon made them pay with a Swansea goal, but Tony Vaughan equalised just before half time. However, they couldn't hold on in the second half and Andy Robinson (58) put Swansea back in front. Lee Trundle's scored a 70th minute penalty and Kevin Nugent added a fourth a minute later when Stags keeper Kevin Pilkington failed to clear, prompting Lee Williamson to kick out at Leon Britton and reduce Town to nine men. Swansea go back to the top of the table on goal difference while Mansfield slip to 9th.
