The Third Place #17

Last updated : 02 November 2003 By Andy Beill
Bury 2-1 Yeovil Town (attendance: 3,086)
Yeovil lead through Jake Edwards (31), but Paul O'Shaughnessy levelled soon after. And it was to be a dismal end for Yeovil when debutant Stephen Reed was sent off in the 86th minute, and Lee Unsworth got the winner for Bury 2 minutes later.

Cheltenham Town 1-1 York City (attendance: 3,431)
York have failed to score in their last six away matches, so things were looking up when Jon Parkin scored from distance in the 77th minute. But Damien Spencer's 85th minute header denied them the win as he scored his first of the season since a hat-trick in August.

Doncaster Rovers 1-0 Torquay United (attendance: 6,863)
Dave Penney dispelled the myth that the manager of the month will see his side stumble in their next game, thanks to Paul Green's cool finish in the 21st minute. That goal's enough to keep Rovers 2nd in the table on goal difference, and are now just 2 points behind leaders Hull City.

Hull City 2-2 Macclesfield Town (attendance: 15,053)
Martin Carruthers was first to the rebound after Paul Abbey's free kick was turned onto the woodwork to give Macclesfield a surprise 5th minute lead. But Richard Hinds celebrated being back in the side with a spectacular 25-yard goal just minutes later. Colin Little was sent off for violent conduct just before half time, and Danny Allsopp (56) made the ten men pay by bustling his way through and putting the Tigers ahead. However, they were punished for sloppy play, and Macclesfield equalised deep in stoppage time from Danny Whitaker's free kick. The Silkmen become only the second side to take a point from the KC Stadium this season.

Kidderminster Harriers 2-2 Cambridge United (attendance: 2,401)
Harriers' Sean Parrish scored the opener just before half time for his 7th of the season, but Cambridge took control in the second half with goals from Dave Kitson (59) and Gareth Williams (63). However, Kidderminster fought back, and John Williams levelled 10 minutes from time. It was a disappointing end for the visitors, who also had Warren Goodhind sent off in the 89th minute.

Leyton Orient 2-1 Rochdale (attendance: 3,623)
Matthew Lockwood scored a 23rd minute penalty, but Rochdale's Lee McEvilly did likewise just before the hour mark to restore parity. That lasted until the final minute when - for the second week running - Orient striker Gary Alexander scored a last minute goal. Their climb up the table takes them to 15th, leapfrogging 'Dale who are down to 16th.

Lincoln City 2-0 Carlisle United (attendance: 4,044)
Carlisle never looked like taking anything from this game when Steve Livingstone was sent off for a trip after 20 minutes. Simon Yeo and Gary Fletcher finished from close range either side of half time to make sure of that.

Mansfield Town 2-1 Boston United (attendance: 5,161)
Simon Weatherstone put the visitors in front after 27 minutes, but the lead lasted just 5 minutes thanks to Stags forward Junior Mendes. 6 minutes into the second half, Mendes struck again, ending Boston's 5-match unbeaten run.

Oxford United 3-1 Darlington (attendance: 4,962)
Darlington are without a win on their travels this season while Oxford are unbeaten at home, so David McGurk's 23rd minute goal for the visitors stunned the Kassam Stadium crowd. But things went to pieces for the Quakers in the second half, starting with Mark Rawle's 52nd minute equaliser. Daniel Mellanby was then shown his second red card of the season, before Dean Whitehead put Oxford in the driving seat with a 74th minute free kick. McGurk joined Mellanby for an early bath in the 83rd minute, and nine-man Darlo fell to a last minute Paul Wanless header. Oxford stay 3rd while the Quakers drop into the bottom two.

Scunthorpe United 6-2 Huddersfield Town (attendance: 4,715)
Peter Beagrie's 25-yard free kick and Matthew Sparrow's impressive volley gave Scunthorpe a 2-0 lead at half time. Andy Booth pulled one back with a diving header just after the break, but things went downhill from there. Lee Fowler was sent off in the 53rd minute, and Terry Barwick scored two minutes later. Steve MacLean added another two before Andy Booth headed past Sam Russell again. But MacLean lobbed Ian Gray to seal his hat-trick and complete the scoring in the 87th minute.

Southend United 0-1 Northampton Town (attendance: 5,085)
Southend had only themselves to blame for gifting Northampton the three points. A succession of chances and a Jay Smith penalty were all missed, and Town punished them on the hour mark with a Paul Trollope free kick. Kevin Maher was off in the 90th minute for a second bookable offence to compound Southend's misery.

Swansea City 0-0 Bristol Rovers (attendance: 7,536)
Swansea are struggling for goals without top scorer Lee Trundle, and are now without a win in their last four home games.
