City were behind after only 8 minutes after Paul Musselwhite was caught out. A long throw into the City box saw Steve Burton head off the line with Musselwhite beaten. However, Paul Futcher sent it straight back over the pair of them to put the home side ahead.

Futcher then almost scored at the other end, heading Burton's left wing cross onto his own crossbar.

The Imps were reduced to ten men after 20 minutes, with Paul Morgan blocking Michael Branch's free run at goal after being put clear from a quick Stuart Green free kick. Referee Scott Mathieson showed the defender a red card, and City made the numerical advantage count just a minute later.

Carl Regan shot across goal and Gary Alexander nodded home from close range at the back post.

Alexander had a header saved soon later, and Stuart Green and Ryan Williams also had shot saves. Meanwhile, Branch and John Anderson were guilty of firing over with good chances that should have put City in front at the break.

Early in the second half Dean Keates had a low shot turned around the post, but after that Lincoln started to get back into the game.

Steve Burton was booked for catching Dean Cropper when the Imps went two on two in a counter attacking move, with the home fans calling for red.

Stuart Elliott was brought on after 68 minutes in an attempt to put City back in the driving seat and within minutes his team-mate Green came within inches of making it 2-1, shooting just wide.
Elliott had Green screaming at him for opting to shoot instead of pass in a later move, but an even better chance came with just five minutes left to play. Elliott worked his way into the area and blasted a shot against the crossbar. The ball rebounded to Alexander who headed back against the bar, before Green went over at the third attempt.
