Jason Price had City's best chance of the first half but shot over. Stuart Green twice saw efforts saved after the break although it was Chesterfield who were creating far more chances.

And it looked like City would have even more trouble keeping the Spireites out when captain Ian Ashbee was given his marching orders in the 62nd minute. He caught Adam Smith with his studs from behind and referee Mr. Cowburn had no second thoughts over showing him the red card.

But within two minutes of going down to ten men, City went in front. Substitute Delroy Facey crossed from the right, Junior Lewis - playing as a makeshift striker - played in Stuart Green who took a touch before finishing left-footed.

Chesterfield had chances to get something from the game but were unable to take any of them, so the three points went City's way in unlikely circumstances.

City line-up (4-4-2): Myhill; France, Cort, Delaney, Dawson; Price (Joseph 53), Ashbee, Keane, Green; Lewis, Walters (Facey 53).
Un-used subs: Edge, Allsopp, Wilbraham.
