The midfielder had an injury-plagued season last year, starting just six league games since signing from Kidderminster in the summer. However, he was a prominent figure in City's build-up to this season, and was on the bench for the opening game against Darlington. He then suffered a foot injury and hasn't played since.

His manager Peter Taylor is now hoping to step up the 28-year-old's return to action.

The Tigers boss said: "To be honest it's a baffling situation. He doesn't seem to be any nearer playing again. As far as I'm concerned, it's not as bad as he's saying and that's why we're investigating it further.
"Obviously we want anyone who is on the books of this club to contribute to the team. We need to get to the bottom of the problem."

Appleby is rated by some as one of the top midfielders in Division Three, but if and when he is fit again he may struggle to command a first team place with Ian Ashbee, Stuart Green and Dean Keates already vying for the two central midfield places.
