Jay Smith - at the double
After City had dominated the early procedings, the home side got a goal against the run of play, with Jay Smith firing in a wonder-strike from 25 yards out.

The Shrimpers then took the game to City and increased their lead in the 41st minute. A horrendous Carl Regan error allowed Mark Rawle to poke the ball past Alan Fettis.

And then on the stroke of half time the score changed to 3-0. Andy Holt pulled down Daniel Marney inside the box, and a penalty was awarded. Holt was booked, while Southend's Tes Bramble was sent off for hitting Marc Joseph. However, the disruptions didn't put off Jay Smith, who sent Fettis the wrong way with the spot-kick.

Steve Burton, John Anderson and Daniel Webb were all brought on at half time, and Webb had a chance with a header that he put wide, but City couldn't make anything of the numerical advantage and returned home with no points again.

City line-up (4-4-2): Fettis; Regan, Whittle, Joseph, Holt (Burton 45); Green (Anderson 45), Melton, Delaney, Williams; Forrester, Elliott (Webb 45).
Un-used subs: Musselwhite, Dudfield.
