Barnsley had the better of the opening exchanges, hitting the bar twice before going ahead in the 28th minute with Tom Baker scoring from Chris Lumsdon's through ball. Griff Jones added another five minutes before half time.

The home side were all over City again in the second half, but Simon Russell - who has learnt that he won't be kept on City's books next season - grabbed a consolation goal in the closing stages after Clayton Donaldson won the ball with a controversial challenge.

City line-up: Musselwhite, Norton, Cattermole (Matthews 68), Tomlinson, Byron, Peat, Cooper, Blair, O'Neil, Donaldson, Russell.
Un-used subs: Harvey, Beattie.
