Kilbane, 34, has made almost 600 senior appearances during his career, representing Preston, West Brom, Sunderland, Everton and Wigan.
He spent the second half of last season on loan at Huddersfield and helped the Terriers to reach the League One play-off final at Old Trafford, where they lost to Peterborough.
Kilbane has won 110 caps for the Republic of Ireland and is second on the country's all-time list of appearances to Aston Villa goalkeeper Shay Given.
