Perhaps City's leading contender, goalkeeper Boaz Myhill, was snubbed in favour of Reading's Marcus Hahnemann. He was one of five players picked from the title-winning side - defenders Ibrahima Sonko and Nicky Shorey, midfielder Steve Sidwell, and forward Kevin Doyle being the others.

Midfielder Steve Jagielka was the sole representitive for league runners-up Sheffield United.

Watford striker Marlon King, veteren Leeds right-back Gary Kelly, Wolves centre back Jolean Lescott, and midfielders Jason Koumas (Cardiff) and Ashley Young (Watford) are the other players voted by their fellow professinals into the team of the year.

Last season, City's top scorer Stuart Elliott was in the League One team of the year. The previous season Andy Dawson was selected for the Division Three 'team', while the year before Alan Fettis, then goalkeeper for City, was picked.

Former loan players Kevin Betsy, now of Wycombe, and Grimsby's Michael Reddy are in this year's League Two 'team'.
