Luton Sack Newell

City's 2-1 win at Kenilworth Road was a fifth successive defeat for the Hatters who are currently 2nd from bottom in the Championship, just a point ahead of Leeds, who also claimed victory against Luton on Saturday, with 8 games remaining.

Newell was in the headlines earlier today, criticising the Luton board and continuing a war of words with Leeds boss Dennis Wise.

After leading Luton to the League One championship in 2005, Curtis Davies, Rowan Vine, Carlos Edwards and Steve Howard have all been sold for seven-figure fees, while Kevin Nicholls moved to Leeds for £700,000 but controversially wanted to return to Luton. The sales of those players raised £9million, but Newell hasn't been able to spend any of it and claims: "Someone should investigate what's going on at this club."

Unofficial Luton site Hatters Mad reports: "Newell's departure is in all honesty a sad end to a reign of nearly four years in charge that has seen him guide Luton to the league title and a reign that has seen us playing good football rather than the long-ball tactics we saw under Kinnear. This season hasn't been anywhere near as good as the last three seasons, but nevertheless Newell should surely be remembered fondly for his work at the club. Brian Stein will probably take charge for the match against Ipswich on Saturday - if not then we may have to settle for Marvin."
