The home side took the lead after just 8 minutes. Glenn Whelan's cross found on-loan striker Leon Best between City's two centre backs to hit the back of the net.

It didn't take too long for City to draw level though. Nick Barmby and Ian Ashbee played the ball between each other before the skipper played it in towards Craig Fagan. His clever flick over his head found the run of Barmby who finished well with a first time shot.

Leon Cort came desperately close to giving the Tigers the lead. His header from a corner beat the keeper, but Frankie Simek saved his side with a clearance off the line.

The Owls were looking quick on the break, but City went into half time looking more likely of the two to score, especially after Best was forced off through injury just before the break.

City certainly started the better of the two sides in the second half, which was brighter than the first.

Jason Price went on a great run to set himself up with a chance. But after rounding the keeper, he could only hit his shot at a defender on the line.

Keith Andrews found Stuart Elliott in the box, but incredibly last season's top scorer missed the guilt edged chance, shooting wide.

After that, Wednesday took control and City had to hold on to keep themselves in the game. They were finding acres of space down the left wing as Danny Coles - playing at right-back - constantly found himself exposed and outnumbered. Adam Proudlock missed the best of the chances eminating from that flank, glancing a header wide from 6 yards.

The final whistle came as a relief to City who looked in danger of losing the game after having the chances to win it.
