The Sutton-born midfielder has turned down the offer of a new contract from Grimsby Town, for whom he has made 14 first team appearances. He has found the net twice from midfield, but his next goal could be scored in the colours of his hometown club.

However, he denies that a deal has been done with City: "Until my agent tells me about any concrete offers it is purely speculation and nothing more than that."

Hockless is thought to be one of a number of midfielders Peter Taylor is interested in, with Curtis Woodhouse and Kevin Maher also being linked recently, and could face competition for Hockless' signature.

He added: "Next season is going to be an important one for me and it's important I make the right decision about my future."
