Windass started the game on the bench, but came on for Steve McPhee in the 37th minute. McPhee had rounded Palace 'keeper Scott Flinders in a one-on-one before dropping down with a hamstring injury. The referee booked him for diving, but the City striker had to go off seconds later, with Dean Windass making his return.

He hit the post with a free kick in stoppage time, and Nicky Forster put the rebound over from 2 yards out in front of an open goal with the last kick of the half.

Elsewhere in the Championship, Barnsley are winning 1-0 at Luton. Leeds and Southend are both losing, to West Brom and Derby respectively. QPR v Southampton is goalless. If things stay as they are, Barnsley would move just 2 points behind City, who would be level on points with Luton and QPR but with a poorer goal difference and goals for.
