City were the only team in the top half of the table to win today. Luton fell to a 3-1 defeat at Port Vale, Hartlepool also lost, while Tranmere and Sheffield Wednesday could only manage draws. That leaves City 6 points behind Luton with a game in hand, and 4 points ahead of 3rd place Tranmere.

It also comes on the day that Peter Taylor revealed he will sign a two-year contract extension, and that Colchester's top scorer Craig Fagan is set to move to City.

The U's clearly missed their star striker in the match itself, while City fans were perhaps left wondering if they still need to sign him after strolling to a second successive comfortable home win.

It took just 16 minutes for the opening goal to go in, Leon Cort heading home an Andy Dawson corner.

The second goal was less of a training ground routine. A clearance from Colchester 'keeper Aidan Davidson came out to Kevin Ellison, and he lobbed Davidson with a controlled 40-yard right-footed effort. It came back off the crossbar to Nick Barmby who had reacted first running in for the rebound. He took a touch to control it before burying the shot.

They were the last of the goals, but City had countless chances to extend their lead, while Colchester were limited to just a handful of half-chances.

City line-up (4-4-2): Myhill; Stockdale, Cort, Delaney, Dawson; France, Ashbee, Green (Lewis 87), Elliott; Barmby, Ellison (Price 89).
Un-used subs: Duke, Hessenthaler, Wilbraham.
