Newcastle player Guthrie was sent off in injury time on Saturday for taking a swipe at Fagan.
Although Fagan got straight back to his feet, he left St James' Park on crutches and an X-ray today showed a fracture to his right tibia.
He is expected to be out injured for 6-12 weeks.
