Early Boro Goal Enough

Boro put City under early pressure and went ahead in the 8th minute. Ex-Tiger Dean Windass took a quick free kick, and his cross was met by the late run of England international defender Gareth Southgate to head home.

However after that City had their number, and were able to deal with the Teeside club's attacks.

But at the other end star pairing Ugo Ehiogu and Gareth Southgate were a tough barrier for City's attackers to get through, and despite some good moves goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer was never really threatened.

City line-up (4-3-3): Glennon; Edwards, Anderson, Strong, Smith; Green (Williams), Ashbee, Appleby (Greaves); Dudfield (Bradshaw), Alexander (Peat), Elliott.
Un-used subs: Musselwhite, Whittle, Price, Philpott.
