Torquay actually came closest to scoring in the first half, having one chalked off for offside, while Craig Fagan's 29th minute lob went just wide, but neither team really looked too dangerous.

The turning point was 15 minutes into the second half when City were awarded a penalty. Nick Barmby cut the ball back to Junior Lewis. He couldn't quite line up a shot, and as the ball was going away from him he went over. Craig Fagan stepped up to take the penalty and nestled it in the bottom corner.

That rejuvinated City and they took a foothold in the game. Stuart Elliott hit the post with a shot and Barmby had one ruled out for offside, before another penalty was given in the 72nd minute. A great piece of link-up play saw Elliott flick the ball through to Barmby with the back of his heel, and Lee Canoville brought him down as he came in from the left. It was a stonewall penalty, and Elliott - who scored from the rebound of his own saved penalty on Tuesday - hit today's effort low and hard down the middle of the goal into the back of the net to finish it at 2-0.

The Tigers totally controlled the second half, and Torquay were obviously frustrated at being unable to fight their way back into the match.

Luton are still 3 points clear at the top of the table after they beat Swindon today, while Tranmere and Sheffield Wednesday both won so remain 10 points behind City.

City line-up (4-4-2): Myhill; Hinds (Price), Cort, Delaney, Edge; France, Ashbee, Lewis, Elliott; Fagan (Walters), Barmby (Ellison).
Un-used subs: Duke, Hessenthaler.
