The 18-year-old is on the third year of his scholarship at Brunton Park, and joins City on work experience terms. He will be at the club for around two or three weeks, and will be eligible to play for the first team.

Thompson went on similar work experience deals at his hometown club Workington and Runcorn last season. He is yet to make his league debut.

Former Carlisle goalkeeper Mark Prudhoe - who joined City's coaching staff in the summer - enquired about the player's availability, and youth team manager Bill Barr has allowed him to leave to get experience in the Championship. The situation will be reassessed next month.

Carlisle United report that he joins as cover for an injured Hull City goalkeeper. Sergio Leite played in last night's reserve game without any problems, and with Matt Duke loaned out to Stockport, that could imply an injury to City's number 1 Boaz Myhill if the Cumbrians are correct. He has received a couple of early season knocks, but no injury has been reported that would prevent him from playing, and after finding good form in the opening matches Peter Taylor will be looking to keep him in the side.
