City Make Winning Start

Midfielder Steve Melton scored the only goal as City beat Premiership side Sunderland to pick up the Raich Carter Memorial Trophy. Stuart Green's through ball was flicked on by Stuart Elliott, and Melton finished cooly past Mike Ingham in the 19th minute to the delight of the 22,467 crowd.

In the second half, Peter Taylor fielded a reserve line-up who matched the Mackems to hold on to the 1-0 lead.

First half line-up (4-4-2): Musselwhite; Joseph, Whittle, Anderson, Delaney; Regan, Melton, Green, Smith; Jevons, Elliott.
