There was little real action early on, with a John Anderson header and Carl Regan's long-range drive the best of the efforts, until Simon Johnson gave City the lead on his home debut.

It came 10 minutes before half time when Ben Petty hit a long punt upfield, and Johnson and the Bury keeper Garner both dived in for it. Johnson came out of the challenge with the ball, and finished left-footed from a tight angle.

Justin Whittle then showed why he deserved to be back in the team, making two saving tackles for City to hold onto their lead until half time.

City were sluggish when they came out for the second half, but looked like getting back into the match when Lawrie Dudfield came on as a substitute. He created two chances with Gary Alexander coming close with a header, then Stuart Green almost going through on goal from a Dudfield pass.

However, Bury hit back with a goal moments later. Dunfield got in and as Glennon tried to smother the shot, Pawel Abbott scored with the goal gaping.

Abbott should have got a second when Glennon failed to gather a long-range shot, but blased over.

City came close to pulling back the lead when a corner was cleared off the line, but Bury were good for the draw and deserved to go home with a point.

City line-up (4-4-2): Glennon; Regan, Whittle, Anderson, Smith; Petty (Bradshaw 83), Green, Greaves, Morrison (Price 55); Johnson (Dudfield 59), Alexander.
Un-used subs: Musselwhite, Keates.
