Hughes came through the youth ranks at Wrexham where he made a name for himself as a goalscoring midfielder. He joined Birmingham City in a £1million deal in 1997, where he went on to achieve promotion and spend two seasons in the Premiership before moving to Charlton three years ago.

He made 18 starts and 9 substitute appearances as the Addicks suffered relegation in 2006/07, and leaves to join their new Championship rivals Hull City on a Bosman free transfer.

The 5'9" Liverpool-born player is now 31 years old, and is City's second signing of the summer. He's signed a 3-year contract and has been handed the number 11 shirt for 2007/08.
