In an exciting match, Southend opened the scoring after 34 minutes with Mark Gower's close-range strike.

Junior Lewis levelled in the 42nd minute, but Southend were back in front before half time after a corner was only cleared as far as Kevin Maher who fired in from outside the area.

Parity was restored midway through the second half thanks to Ian Ashbee's 18-yard effort.
