City manager Nigel Pearson told BBC Radio Humberside: "It was a no-brainer really and he has an opportunity to show what he can do.
"We've seen so far that he has quite a bit of ability."
Belaid was born in Paris and was capped by France at U19 level but choose to play for Tunisia at full international level. He played 67 times for Slava Prague before leaving them as a free agent.
Pearson added; "Because of the way the deal is structured we have an option to extend it if he does well. Whether he can adjust to the English game remains to be seen"
