Mick McCarthy's Premiership side came to the KC Stadium to contest the Raich Carter Shield but they lost 1-0, just as they did in the inaugural game held in December 2002.

The goal this time came from Craig Fagan in the 11th minute. Marc Joseph's ball was nodded on by Stuart Green, and Nick Barmby's clever flick put Craig Fagan through. The offside flag stayed down as Fagan finished well.
