A listed building built in the 19th century which has actually been turned around to face the other way but with the impressive front architecture remaining.

The Punch (minus Judy) is pleasant enough inside as well. It's a little on the small side so you might struggle to get a table. The clientele is a mixture of shoppers and regulars, while football fans are also welcome. Good atmosphere.

The main thing of note here is the food. There was a bit of a wait for the order to be served, but when it came it was well worth it. There's the usual meals you'd expect on a pub menu - jacket potatoes, sandwiches, soup, main meals - but the difference is they're homemade at the Punch and of much higher quality than usual pub food. For meat lovers, try the pie - full of steak and served with real gravy. Most meals come served with chips, which are also homemade, huge and chunky. Old folks may like to take advantage of the Pensioners' Specials on offer. If you're not pushed for time to get to the game, definitely consider having your lunch here. It is worth noting though that this was written after eating there on a Saturday lunchtime. I visited again on a weekday evening and the food seemed pre-prepared with oven chips (served very quickly). It wasn't at all bad by pub standards, but Saturday would seem a better bet to find the usual chef cooking top quality food.

There is a TV, although it was showing the rugby on BBC when I visited so possibly doesn't show the live Sky Sports games. You can only see it from one end of the bar.

Music plays, not too loudly, and there's an Itbox for the gamblers.

Overall, possibly not the best place if you want a large table to sit around and watch a game on TV, but if you happen to be in town and fancy a drink or are looking for somewhere to have lunch, pop into the Punch.
