Walsh played non-league football for Morecambe, Chorley and Leyland Motors. His older brother, Mickey, was a more accomplished player, capped 21 times by the Republic of Ireland.

He is no relation to his namesake, the former Leicester player, but was his manager as a youngster in the Lancashire County team.

He was a teacher for 30 years, while also working at Bury, Chester City and Chelsea.

After 16 years as a part-time scout for Chelsea, he gave up teaching to be José Mourinho's full time European scout.

Sam Allardyce took him to Newcastle United, where he met coach Nigel Pearson.

When Pearson became Leicester manager, Walsh was appointed one of his two Assistants, as well as putting his scouting knowledge to use as Head of Recruitment.

He followed Pearson and fellow Assistant Craig Shakespeare to Hull City in June 2010.
